On Film: Admit One

Twenty Twenty Two On Film

A full year of snaps was an idea that started quite a while ago stemming from our brand mission to create innovative content. One thing we are proud of is that the vast majority of our creative work is shot and directed by us. It allows the team to express exactly what Noodle Bagz is about. It is an authentic representation of the brand.

The old film aesthetic has always been one we favored and saved when it popped up on our feeds. A grainy desaturated look reminds us of the stacks of photo albums at our parents house. There is a unique enthusiasm and excitement provided by the limited number of opportunities you have in one roll of film. We absolutely love the delayed gratification of finally getting a roll developed. Will it be a silky crisp still or an overexposed blurry mess.

Our Process

It starts with selecting the type of of film to shoot. This first step has become a favorite activity of ours, there are so many options, each creating their own unique look. From CineStill to Kodak, Tungsten or Black & White, exploring and researching different film types has been enjoyable. Once we have selected a new roll of film, the goal was to get through it in 30 days. Some months were easier than others. A few busy weekends or an event and we may get through multiple. By months end after click 36, we’d drop it off at the camera store (we use George’s Camera in North Park) and ask them to develop and scan.

Few days later, an email notification and a drop box link are hastily opened. One time I pulled over on the side of the road to look through the latest photos. This is one of the more exciting parts, seeing photos you may have taken a few weeks ago, and sharing them among ourselves and our friends. As with anything we started to learn how to shoot better, it may have taken us a few rolls but slowly we started getting quality shots that we have fallen in love with. Each month we posted our favorites to Instagram. See the timeline below.

The Kit

We get a lot of questions about what cameras we use. We have a Cannon AE-1 that my mom used in highschool. The others are a Petri T 1000, and an Oympus OM-1. The different films we’ve used this last year are Portra 160, Portra 400, Fuji 200, Ektar 100, Ilford 400, Kodak 200, Kodak 400, Cinestill 800T, Cinestill 50D. We are lucky to have a few good camera shops around that we trust to develop our film and we always get the negatives back.

Coffee Table Book

To us a photo is a captured memory. A still. Of course we love shooting digital on our DSLRs because it allows us many opportunities to get a good shot. But film reminds us that not all things in life are perfect, and when you do get a great shot it is that much sweeter. It was never originally our intention to create a book but it became a natural part of the process. We are most proud of how many of our friends are in this book. Those same friends that have continued to support Noodle Bagz. We hope this book becomes a great statement piece in living rooms everywhere.
